Lone_ranger Hello to the world, or at least to all those who view this forum. I hope I have the right Jews for Jesus or I will B very embarrassed.Redface I purchased a Shabbat Menora through the mail and I was hoping that someone could answer some questions about how to use it properly. There was no instructions and I wish to be respectful of my relatives the Jews, (I am a gentile Smile ).

Let me begin:

Can you light a Shabbat Menora any day of the week or is it only specifically Saturday? What about lighting it onother day of the week would this be offensive?

Is there a certain order in which I should light the candles? Or a certain hour during the day which it must be lighted?

What is the difference between a Hanukah Menora and a Shabba'at Menora besides the number of candles and what is being celebrated by each?

Could you give me a history behind the Shabba'at Menora such as when it became a central part of the Jewish heritage?

I saw the movie Schindler's List, (hope you did Smile ), was that a Shaba'at Menora that was featured in the scene that Schindler has finally gained control over his workers, (the Jews HE SAVED), and HE insisted they worship God for the first time in the comfort of HIS factory?

What did you think of the movie Schindler's List? (It was in black and white--why do you suppose Spielburg Filmed the movie in such a manner?). Was he trying to project timelessness?

Back to the Shabaa't MenoraBig Grinoes the Bible mention this Menora, New or old Testament? What about the Hanakuh Menora? What about Qwanza?Smile

Tomorrow is Saturday. Any additional information you could supply would B super.  Preferably before I have to light it.

Peace B with you,
SIG

GoyOfY'shua,

I was very much interested in what you answered inregards to my Menora questions.
There is no longer your post but please make yourself known again. I purchased this Menora from Jews 4 Jesus. They are one of my main contributors.

I can describe the menora to you and then maybe you would have more comments.

I got to the forum here kinda late. Been swamped. Visited a young boy named Cody, 19 years old, in a local psych ward. He had two choices: go to jail or admit himself. No, it is not my ministry. He is just a real good friend. When I first met him he thought Homosexuality was NOT a sin. I told him I could pick out passages from the bible that explicitly affirm the sinfullness of this behavior, but that he would rationalize them away. Sure enough he did, but I over whelmed him with soo many passages he caved. I love Cody. He actually loves girls and writes poetry about the beauty of relationships.

I thpought of something else. Why are Menoras called Menoras? What does the name mean?

I will check back here hopefully you will have returned by then.

I didn't even have a chance to light my Menora. Can I light it tomorrow without breaking all the rules?

Peace B with U,
SIG

What do you mean by a "shabbat menorah"? Are you using regular
candlesticks, or one of the candlesticks that have multiple branches,
that people with children use? (They light one candle for each child).

It is traditionally set aside for shabbas and yom tov usage, although I
don't know why you personally could not use it at other times if you
so choose....

It doesn't matter; however on shabbas traditionally only two candles
are used (unless you are also lighting for kids). It must be lit no
later than 18 minutes before sundown; you can light it earlier but
there is a limitation as to how early you can light it. It's best to
stay with the 18 minutes.

A hanukah menorah must have the candles at an even level.
Doesn't matter with shabbas candles. There is a difference
in where you light, and how you can use or not use the light.
In a hanukah menorah you put the candles in right to left and
light left to right. Candles go in an acending order (ie, you add
a candle each night)

It's been a long time since I've seen the movie and I don't remember
the scene you are describing.

The menorah was used in the Temple and is mentioned in the Torah.
Hanukah happened much later in time and is not found in the Tanach.
Qwanza of course is a recent invention and seems to be a take off of
hanukah, with the candle lighting Smile

And to you to

I appreciate you taking the time to give info on this. Are you Jewish? If you are "Toda rabba!". I think that is the way to spell it.

This a link to the online store. it is listed as a Knesset menorah but, Is there a difference between the Shabba'at menorah. As I stated there are disks with cilanders that fit in the place of the candle openings. Oil you think? If it is different then what is this menorah used for. Thanks  SIG.

Oh, okay I see what you mean by the menorah. I have seen those used
for decorative purposes but never seen them used for shabbas.
Any candlesticks may be used, but people generally try to make them
the most beautiful they can to honor shabbas.
Traditionally two candles are lit for shabbas (for "keep" and "remember")
People that have children often light an additional candle for each child.
The cylinders you mention probably are for oil; many people use oil
instead of candles for shabbas....either is fine.
