I attended a bible study/debate between Christians and Hebrew Isriaelites (african descent) and the Hebrews claim that the name Jesus/ J_sus was given by the greeks (a derivative from Zsus idol god) to deceive the true isriaelites so that they would forget who they were.
Honestly, the reason they gave for the change of yahshua's name was very unclear. I just want to know if there is any truth to this claim and where I can go to research this information for myself.
Thank you.

There are five separate individuals named Jesus in the Bible, which is not such a wonder since Jesus is the Greek version of the Hebrew name Joshua.
The most famous Jesus, of course, is the semi-biological son of Mary, son-by-law of Joseph and monogenes Son of God.
The name Joshua is the Hebrew form of the Greek name Jesus, and most probably the name by which Jesus was known by His contemporaries. Jesus was fascinated by the Book of Isaiah, probably mostly because this Book appears to be entirely about Him, but perhaps also because the name Isaiah is almost identical to the name Joshua with the two segments reversed.
Other men named Jesus in the New Testament are an ancestor of Christ (Luke 3:29), Joshua (Acts 7:45 and Hebrews 4:8), a fellow worker of Paul named Jesus Justus (Collosians 4:11) and a Jewish magician that Paul and Barnabas meet on Cyprus, named Bar-Jesus (a Greek transliteration of the Aramaic for Son Of Joshua).
The name Jesus means Yah Will Save.

I did a Google search and found this website.

It's interesting, but I don't think the Lord minds if humans change His name to something more understandable in their own languages. It was He who gave us all our different languages. I'm sure the Lord has more important things for us do, think and pray - love and obedience to His commandments for instance.

A pure blasphemes statement against YHWH the Almighty G-D.
"His name shall be called EMANUEL ("G-D WITH US")
YHWH-HOSHEA ~ ie "The Savior", was contracted to Ya'shua or
Ye'sus with the French "J" JESUS or Jo'shua.
"JOSHUA" is also translated "JESUS."
MOSES represents the "Law" who can take you out of Egypt
(the world), JOSHUA (JESUS) represents "Faith," who can bring
you into the "Land."
Moses could only look on but not enter.
The works of the LAW appeals to our PRIDE and boasting.
The Spirit of the LAW (LOVE) appeals to G-D and his free
gift.
"Thy Word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against Thee.!"
"SHALOM"!

the Name Jesus is simply Y'eshua translated into english, like matthias (hebrew)translates into Matthew or sh'imon (pardon the grammar mistakes) into Simon
also on the, matter of the name Jesus being a derivative of Zeus there arguement is unsound because in the greek language (the written language is LATIN) Jesus began with an I becoming Iesus, whereas Zeus always began with a Z not an I
a good place to start studying the language would be to start with Biblical Hebrew/Greek to English dictionary, concordance ie Strongs exhaustive concordance or possibly Vines concordance/ dictionary
but as for comparing names i'd start with Greek Mythology

Those African Hebrews were practicing Afro-centrism.
"WHERE DID THE NAME JESUS COME FROM?"
RE:
From his parents (God)
That is not true.
He was called Yeshua which is the male form of the Hebrew word for salvation. (There were males given this name in the Bible.)
He alone is our Salvation.
To change His Name is to take His reason for coming, away from sight, especially from His Jewish people.
There is absolutely NO good reason to not use the Name Yeshua.
There was no good reason for English translaters to go from translilterations of the Hebrew in 3 different languages (I think the 'J' came from a German translation) instead of using His true Hebrew Name.
The same crazy thing happened with "christ" which was a translation of Mashiach (anointed). The greek christos meant oiling a shield.
We now use the word Messiah to translate mashiach in the (OT)Tanach but still maintain the Greek in the NT.
That is at the least, stupid, but in all probability of antisemitic origin.
