Yeah, that is strange, isn't it? I still don't get when and why the Jewish people decided to trace things matrilineally. It seems to fly in the face of the that constant refrain: "We do everything the same since Moses based on the Oral Torah." On the surface, either Moses forgot what God said about this issue (which would be very bad for the Oral Torah) or Moses deliberately wrote the Torah against God's wishes (which would negate everything in it and the Oral Torah). No doubt that there is some deeper reasoning to this that clarifies everything.
