God is so wonderful, and the names of God in scripture help us finite creatures know more about our infinite God.
When I was talking with an intertribal church some years ago about the name of God as translated into their language, I realized that I did not know all the names of God revealed in scripture that I later heard grade school kids recite in front of their church. Eventually I found a helpful site (allaboutGod), and made individual cards to try to memorize them and get them into my head a little better. I would like to post them here, in a one name/one thread fashion. Those who know Hebrew will probably have other spellings or treatments, and that would be welcome to see, but mainly the specific name and applicable verses are what I am going for here.
YHVH - Found more often in the OT than any other name for God, approx. 7,000 times. The Tetragrammaton (The Four Letters). The Hebrew verb "to be." Declares God's absolute being--Creator, without beginning and without end. Sometimes pronounced Jehovah, or Yaweh; the Jews stopped pronouncing this name by about 200 C.E. (A.D.) out of fear of breaking the commandment - Exodus 20:7 - Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
Yeshua (Jesus) as YHVH (LORD)
The LORD Who revealed Himself as YHVH in the OT is revealed as Yeshua in the NT. From the holy scriptures we see that Jesus shares the same attributes as YHVH and clearly claims to be YHVH. In John 8, Jesus presents Himself as the I AM.
John 8:56-59 - 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad. 57 Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? 58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. 59 Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.
Romans 10:9 - That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Romans 10:13 - For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Joel 2:32 - And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.
YESHUA (Jesus) is YHVH (LORD) - Calling on Yeshua as Lord is the same as calling Him YHVH, because Yeshua (Jesus) is YHVH (LORD), the Messiah foretold throughout the entire OT.
