Yugoslavia first descended into civil war in December 1991 when Croatia and Slovenia—with support from Germany and the Vatican—declared their independence from the Yugoslav government. Since that time, Bosnia, Macedonia and Kosovo have also declared their independence, with each receiving backing from Berlin.
