When I think about the story of how our Lord died and sufferd ,I get the strong impression Pontius Pilates understood better who the Christ was than the Jews themselves .In Johannes 19:19 we read: "Pilate also had an inscription written and put on the cross. It read, "Jesus the Nazorean, the King of the Jews".
In the Hebrew language it is "Jeshua Hanozri Wumelech Hajehudim".
The first 4 characters on this frame create the name " JHWH ", this is how the hostel Jews could recognise to their own horror the Hebrew name of their God written on wood hanging above the crucified Yeshua.
Panic all over perhaps this was for the first time they saw that by the hand of a Roman heathen they had to face who they crucified on the three .
They knew about the exsistens of their God only through what was written ,but the very existens of his being was unclear, as if they were blinded.
They could not see it was Jahweh himself .
In Isajah 29:13 we read: "
The Lord said: Since this people draws near with words only and honors me with their lips alone, though their hearts are far from me, And their reverence for me has become routine observance of the precepts of men,
Therefore I will again deal with this people in surprising and wondrous fashion: The wisdom of its wise men shall perish and the understanding of its prudent men be hid.
Woe to those who would hide their plans too deep for the LORD! Who work in the dark, saying, "Who sees us, or who knows us?"
They knew God through the commandments , and this is how they saw Jahweh. It was a god who was given to them through the Law .
But they did not know their God from within their heart .
This is why the christ called them hypocrits and becaus of their hypocrosy Jahweh did not give them the light to take the vaile away before their eyes.
