I saw that with glastnost not only Russians left the Ossetia area but also the JEws. I have heard of Tat mountain Jews and wonder if they are in Israel now.
This area has over 30 different ethnolinguistic people groups so it is complicated as to who is fighting who.
Amazingly, the Ossetians don't see Russia as the bad guys. Why?
1) This region is kind of like the west virginia of Russia. It is a beutiful resort area but lacks development or is run down. Many places are totally inaccessible except by a donkey or helicopter.
2) Stalin was from Georgia. This mountainous region is also famous for mafia type strong men. I mean, the norm is not ethical buisness like here, as I understand, the norm is like the mafia in total control.
3) Some Ossetianas are Muslims, but not strong ones. There has been alot of cultural change and land swaping hands with stalin deporting people and people groups that are not represented politicaly so the place is a powder keg of violence.
Finally, there is a nice clean but slightly anti chechen war movie made by russia in the 1994 time period that shows how beutiful the region is that I reccomend watching if you can find it.
