Although this won't help you with the NT, Artscroll has a nice
Tanach.
Those are both good Bibles. There is one you can get free online as a download called the
Net Bible that I use, but I grew up reading the KJV and it has done me no harm.

Well the true Bible is in Hebrew (with a bit of Aramaic); any translation is merely the translator's interpretation of the original text.
Without going into
my favorites, my suggestion is to look at several versions and get to the "what thought is being conveyed here" through comparison.
Here is a site where you can compare *many* versions easily:
Crosswalk - Bible Study Tools
I have not used the commentaries on that site, so can't promote or criticize. One commentary I do like is The Complete Jewish New Testament Commentary also by David Stern. But commentary is
just that, commentary. Not scripture.
The New International Version would be what I recommend for someone just starting out.
The King James is a more litteral word for word translation. The NIV is what they call a dynamic equivalent.
I like KJV in one sence that if it doesn't make sense it just leaves it and doesn't try to "fix" it.
Now there are many translations and valuble free tools on line like Blue Letter Bible so you can read a verse in many translations if you have a question.
If you have no facility for Biblical languages that is what my college professor recommended, at least check it in multiple translations.
You are opening a can of worms here about inspiration but I don't want to answer questions you aren't asking as long as you see the Bible as inspired by God and as scripture.
Hello Stacie. Try and get a copy of the New International Version. It's the most accurate English translation. I have the Complete Jewish Bible as well, and I added the Power New Testament by Dr. William J. Morford, to keep track of the Hebrew contexts.
There are only a few unnecessary additions to some scriptures in the KJV, and some of the translations are way too much out of context, but the language is definitely poetic. For starters, compare Romans 8:1 of the KJV and the NIV and other translations. And dig out why there is a difference.
Blessings!
thank you all i will have a look into it...g-d bless you all...
there is biblegateway which has a lot of different translations.
I prefer the King james version I used to read the Niv but often as I read it would be missing words to certain verses or even miss a whole verses.
one verse in the Niv just shocks me is this
Philippians 2:6 (New International Version)
6Who, being in very nature[a] God,
did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
and yet the King james say otherwise
Philippians 2:6 (King James Version)
6Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
which is it does jesus do not consider being equal to God something need to be grasped or not?
if Not then why does jesus often make statments to the jewish people in his time about Himself being God?
