Full Version: Why memorize the Bible?

When I was in the Army memorizing was a big part of what our discipleship group did.  My church at home was northern and people didn't carry their own Bible to church or take notes.  And we didn't memorize.

But I think this is a JEwish thing looking at an imporant text in Deuteronomy 6:4-9.  THere is the shema, but also something that doesn't say memorize but seems to be part of it.  The people described are literate and write.  BUt the kids might memorize and not write yet.

The part about love GOd with all your heart sheds light on another aspect here.  Memorizing is a byproduct of meditation and heart felt believing it.

Memorizing by it self is almost worthless.  One book I saw said for a child to memorize then understand it as an adult is like turning water into wine.

Then there is Joshua 1:8-9 and Psalm 119:9-11 some verses my discipleship group used to justify the pratice of memorizing.

They put a peg ora title on the verse so it isn't like you have a file in you file cabinet but don't know exacly where even though you know it is  in there.
You could possibly put it in terms or illustrate the gist of what it actually is saying and how the written word can benefit another through experiencing it's truth in your own life. (OJT translator)

For instance I was a wandering Aramean (Abraham) living by faith in the goodness of God and humanity. The law came and reminded me of what a sinner I really was, THEN I realized the only hope for my mind, heart, body and soul is Jesus.

Actually I am believing that I am not wasting my time and that your ability to ask real life questions continues to keep you entertained.

Peace Chad.

Chad,

BTW,

Are bibles allowed in the jails and penitentiary?

Memorizing the results of sin, as well as experiencing it's effects bear witness to the truth of the "system" God has allowed.
i believe He said to teach these precepts to your children and your childrens children to discuss them at home with your families to talk about them when you are out on the road or when you gather with others to keep them ever present in your lives and always on your lips.it is the same message in the new testament,Paul writes be ready to give answer to all who inquire and  be constant in season and out of season our number one priority is to study the scriptures not to memorize them.we should know them from studying them daily and using their instruction in our daily lives.we were created to worship our creator, its hard wired into us just like any other physical emotional or spiritual desires that come to us by design our glory comes to Him when we use the gifts He has given us to make His will known to others.discussions and blogs are great as long as they are glorifying God we are instructed to do all to the glory of God and studying the scriptures lets us know exactly what HIS will is and how to go about pleasing HIM.when we share His Word with others in a responsible way it brings glory to Him we must decide with Gods help what is the best way to share HIs Word using our talents and our strengths to uplift and encourage other believers and to instruct in a loving way those who are new to the faith or those who dont know much but want to learn more.prayer is a great avenue for all our questions and He is faithful to answer if we know how to listen.
