Academic institutions shy away from teaching leadership.  But pastors love John Maxwell's leadership books.  It is a way to disciple your self to read his books.

It is because Leadership is an off shoot of virtue ethics.  The better a person you are the more influence and leadership you have.

John Maxwell  says leadership is influence.

The Military teaches leadership.  It is about who you are as a person as awhole.

Oswald sanders has a book called spiritual leadership. He points out psalm 75:6 where it says not from the east or the west comes exaltation, but GOd is the judge and He lifts up one and puts down another.

I also would add no one is smarter than the Holy Spirit and that listening to God is the most important thing to be a leader.
Going somewhere few want to follow -for a good reason.

I believe the scripture says beware when everyone speaks well of you or something to that effect.

The beatitudes are express on the issue of true leadership.

Popularity wanes in the world scheme as your beloved acceptance into God's Kingdom flourishes. (Ye are not of this world.)

Service is a key-note speaker who leads into a pastors sermon. (John the Baptist for example, or the praise and trust of a child.)

That is indication of good leadership, to be a leader of followers, or a good parent. (Priest of the Family)

I believe you are right, that the Holy Spirit is the best to help in situations where you don't really want to be led by any human being.
The epitome of totally human Leadership of a nation I think is Solomon for He was wise, and sought the Lord at first.

The abortion issue can be simply solved in the example of the 2 women coming before Solomon in the dispute about the parental rights of the
new born babe.

I am not saying everyone that is the product of unwanted pregnancy gets adopted into a good home, I am saying there are many more reasons to direct monies toward life than opening wider the threshold for a billion dollar industry, that promotes partial births of a 7 month old fetus and then peirces the childs skull and sucks the brains out through a tube.

Qoh.7
[12] For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.
