You are going to get different answers, depending on if you
are asking a Jew or a Messianic/Christian.
But, yes, you are correct.

Steve, much of Christianity today (sadly) does not balance between being free of the 613 mitzvot and still worshipping the Jewish Christ (Messiah). So, much of Evangelical Christianity is on the gentile superiorist, anti-Jewish end of "Christianity" that has strayed from being Christian. Meanwhile, Messianic Judaism (as a denomination of Christianity) often goes on the other end (the Jewish superiorist, anti-gentile) end of "Christian" Christianity.
So, at least Messianic Jews (Jewish Christians) are not "simply evangelical christian[s] (doctrinally) with a jewish veneer [in their observance of Christianity]". Many Messianic Jews, like Pastor Baruch Maoz and myself, say that Messianic "Judaism" is actually not Jewish or Christian, but rather as I just said: "the Jewish superiorist, anti-gentile end of "Christian" Christianity." See Baruch Maoz's article for yourself.

Welcome to the forum Steve...

The problem with the above charge is one of order.
For it would be more accurate to say that 'Christianity' is simply 'Messianic Judaism' as expressed by Gentile proselytes (God fearers) in the midst of an evil and corrupt world. These Gentiles (Christians) had adopted the Jewish faith with their code of morality and attended Jewish meetings even synagogue services but have never fully converted as they did not submit to circumcision and other rulings.
Ezekiel 18:25-32 CJB “So now you say, ‘ADONAI‘ s way isn’t fair.’ Listen, house of Isra’el! Is it my way that is unfair? or your ways that are unfair? (26) When the righteous person turns away from his righteousness and commits wickedness, he will die for it –– for the wickedness he commits he will die. (27) And when the wicked person turns away from all the wickedness he has committed and does what is lawful and right, he will save his life. (28) Because he thinks it over and repents of all the transgressions he committed, he will certainly live, not die. (29) Yet the house of Isra’el says, ‘ADONAI‘ s way isn’t fair.’ House of Isra’el, is it my ways that are unfair, or your ways that are unfair? (30) Therefore, house of Isra’el, I will judge each of you according to his ways, ”says ADONAI ELOHIM. “Repent, and turn yourselves away from all your transgressions, so that they will not be a stumbling block that brings guilt upon you. (31) Throw far away from yourselves all your crimes that you committed, and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit; for why should you die, house of Isra’el? (32) I take no pleasure in the death of anyone who dies, ”says ADONAI ELOHIM, “so turn yourselves around, and live!

Normally, NOPE. Messianic believers in Yashuah may well be the closest group of believers to Yashuah we have. Once they understand that 'Christian' is but the English faith discription of Messianic, the English vocalization of the Hebrew word, then perhaps we can stop the bickering about what we need be called, and get together on how we achieve our calling.
Keep the Faith, and the Watch, as we will soon know the answer as to who is the closest, and who is the farthest from True Messiah following. Interestingly, I doubt if any of us are anywhere close, and we all will need much cleansing, and adjusting.
