A Challenge to Our Intelligence

That's about another puzzle that has been insulting our intelligence for 2000 years: The Roman guards who were asked of Pilate to watch the tomb for three days.(Mat. 27:64)

According to the writer of the gospel of Matthew, the chief priests had to break the Sabbath and, worse than that, a Shabbaton, because it was the first day of Passover, the 14th of Nisan, to go deal with Pilate about surveillance of a dead in the graveyard.

This is an evidence that the guys who wrote the gospels had a very poor knowledge of Jewish culture and customs to picture religious Jewish priests dealing with Pilate on that Sabbath for a group of soldiers to guard the tomb and to prevent anyone from desecrating it.

So, those priests were supposed to take those soldiers to the graveyard, which priests were forbidden to enter, especially on the Sabbath, and do the physical work to seal the tombstone. And all during that Shabbaton.

When that Sabbath was over, which in Israel is at sunset, the same gospel writer sends some women to the tomb with the purpose to anoint Jesus' body. The man had probably forgotten the guards to prevent the approach of any suspect.

The women had one thought in mind only: Who would remove the tombstone. No one thought about how to fight the soldiers to approach the tomb. Obviously they would know they were there. Evidently, the three days they were supposed to watch the tomb turned out to be one.

When the women got there the place was deserted. Instead of the guards, the author reports about an earthquake, when an angel came down from heaven and removed the stone; but the women could not do their job, because there was no one in the tomb; Jesus was not there.
Even the angel had been cheated form being an eyewitness.

Obviously, Jesus had been removed from that tomb even before the guards had been settled at the area to watch.

Then the soldiers that the women had not seen at the tomb, appeared at the house of the priests to say that the tomb was empty and of course, to get a good bribe with the advice to spread around that while they were sleeping, Jesus' disciples had come by night and stolen the body. That's the insult to the intelligence even of a moron, let alone to those who have a mind to think.

How could intelligent Jews give such an advice? How could the soldiers know that the tomb robbers had been Jesus' disciples if they had been sleeping? What about Roman military discipline? The soldiers would all be executed according to Roman military laws. Josephus, who would go down to small details even of family intrigues, never mentioned a word about such a thing.

That's the puzzle that has been insulting our intelligence for too long. Any suggestions?

There is a legitimate answer to each of your questions Ben. I will have to get back to you . First Yeshua was buried ,and His burial was arranged before nightfall ; The beginning of the Sabbath; Nissan 14 was actually preparation day,the day before the special Sabbath on [Thursday]The Hebrew day started at nightfall. Preparations were already discussed , and followed through by the Romans, and Priests[continued]

1. The religous leaders saw jesus as a threat so they did everything they can to make sure jesus stays dead.

Also a seal on a tomb was a common Thing that the Roman Government did to make sure they know if anyone breaks In. Pilate Guard is mostly likely that seal the tomb not the religious leaders.

Nope It was 3 and the cause for The guards not being able to protect the tomb is because they fell like dead men being afraid.

1. The guards are the one that did the work etc.... and yes sleeping on the Job would put someone to death to roman laws but I bet The relgious leaders work a deal with the roman government for they will not die for a lie that they were sleeping.

Okay Ben , I have discussed this issue with another who asked this question already, but for the sake of repetiton I will address it in more detail. Lets start with [Matthew 12:38-40].Since Yeshua claimed to be the Messiah , the scribes and pharisees demanded a sign from Him. The only sign Yeshua gave ;was that of Jonah [Luke 11:30]. If the sign beyond human control was not fulfilled, it would prove to them He was not the Messiah. This being the only sign given ;as an adulterous generation demands a sign, If this sign was not fulfilled then there was no proof to verify His Messiaship, so actually this is the most significant question asked so far on this forum. I am proud of you Ben!Mark8:31 states; And He began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. Indeed, there is not one detail of the Resurrection which is reported consistently by all 4 gospels.  The date, the time of day, the number of angels, and who got to the tomb first are all reported differently.

Ben, I am feeling very angry at the moment, and frustrated about my thesus, but I must realize evil does not want you to hear the truth! I wouldn't say ;G-d perhaps doesn't want you to hear it, because what I have found and understood how the scriptures of Matthew, Luke, and Mark ; Do not contradict each other, but harmonize perfectly! I'm afraid modern interpreters of the Bible make Jesus look like a liar!They have used highly figurative lamguage, which the KJV used an agnostic human interpreter to tell people what the verses really meant. By this liberal method of interpretation; its destroys every basic doctrine in the Bible[ Old and New!][Righteous Anger moment!!!!!!!!!!!!][continued[Matthew 27:62] should read in Greek translation; Now the day that followed the day after preparation day;[Friday ] the Priests , and certainly the Pharisee's came to Pilate[ as the tomb still lie open before the next Sabbath ][which plural Sabbaths would be in the book of Leviticus23;6-7], and on the 21rst. a third Sabbath[Leviticus23:8], and the women purchasing, and bringing the spices , and ointments,The Pharisee's asked that the tomb be sealed and guarded, after concocting a blashemous scheme on the Sabbath in thier hearts on the Passover before the Saturday Sabbath 17th Nisan. In Mark 16:1 the word[Had] is inserted without correct translation from Greek.So they bought sweet spices, not [Had[ bought! Were the markets open on the Sabbath? I think not![ Luke 3 :56 speaks the same; The women rested on the Sabbath]If Yeshua layed in the Tomb on 1 Sabbath only, then Luke, and Mark contradict each other, but if it was 2 Sabbaths they harmonize perfectly![Matthew 28:1] states The 2 mary's came to the Tomb when? So; Wednesday evening, and Thursday-Day=1 day,[Passover Sabbath], Thursday evening, and Friday -day=2 days.[day between Sabbaths]Nisan 15,17], Friday evening, and Saturday -day[Sabbath]= 3 days , and 3 nights. I wonder why they kicked me off Crosswalk Christian forum.Jesus did fulfill this prophesy; anyway you can reason it. I don't think much of Bible Theologians, Scholars , and priests, and Pharisee's ; when they call the G-d of Israel a Liar! I got it ! How about I give you the 362 Prophesies of Yehoshua?
