Does anyone know whether Job 16, verses 9 through 13 (in my New American Standard Version), are considered a description of Messiah's sufferings as God laid on Him the iniquities of us all?  (See Isaiah 53.)

Definitely not.
I am so glad this time is finally here. I have peace in my heart. In church Sunday we were singing the song, JUST AS I AM, and the scripture at the top of the hymnal ( my church has fallen into the trap of using overheads and not hymnals..too bad but that doesnt stop me from using them when I can) and the scripture at the top of the page was Deuteronomy 33:26 There is none like our Gd! That is paraphrased. I went to that scripture and read the rest of it from verse 26 on down and what a lovely, wonderful chapter in the Bible. The whole time I was singing I kept saying over and over again, THERE IS NOTHING THAT COMPARES TO OUR GD! Isnt that the truth!
Yes it is...if you put it against what was done to Jesus by the Romans, the false witnesses and the blows he recieved in front of the High Priest etc it is an exact picture of the Suffering Messiah.
Thank you, Rabbi ben Avrohom.

If you care to respond, I would be interested to know (perhaps somewhat briefly, and in lay terminology!) what is (or are) the current Orthodox explanation(s) of the passage which in Protestant Bibles is Isaiah 53?

Most assuredly not.....what do you see in it that would
lead you to believe so?
Granny D, Shalom.

That would require a large quantity of immagination to call that associated to the suffering of Messiah.  RYbA, says rightly IMO.

In Messiah.  Arley
Good find, Granny D!     Excellent!

This does seem to tie into Psalm 22 and Isaiah 53 nicely.

"The Bulls of Bashan" were spearmen in the OT,and representative of the Roman 5' short spear as part of the soldier's regular carry weaponry.

And,  the verses in Job 16:9-13 would also prophetically designate that Roman archers would have been nearby at the Cross as well.

I'll use this set of verses in the future.  Thanks again.
Not sure, be sure to pay close attention to context. As for Isaiah 53, there are already very large threads for it in theology section.

Hello, Sheitl Queen,

To answer your question very briefly, I noticed similarities between the Job passage and Isaiah 53, as well as what Jesus of Nazareth experienced;  and yet I don't recall ever having heard the Job passage cited as being messianic in nature.

Thank you for responding to my inquiry!  (And thanks to everyone else who took time to respond, as well!)

And before I disappear like the grass that withers and the flowers that fade, allow me to thank you for introducing me to the word "sheitl".  I myself am of the old - REALLY old, nowadays - school: I wear hats to religious services.

Blessings!
