In the 38th year of Captivity (AM 3578 + 38 = AM 3616), in the 3rd year
of King Belshazzar's reign (14 years) AM 3613 + 3 = AM 3616,
(BC 436), the 58th year of Daniel's Captivity), I, Daniel had a vision, after the one that had already appeared to me.
I saw the vision, and it so happened while I was looking, that I was in
Shushan, the citadel, which is in the province of Elam; and I saw in the
vision that I was by the River Ulai. (in Persia)
Then I lifted my eyes and saw, and there standing by the river, was a
Ram which had two horns, and the two horns were high; but one was
higher than the other, and the higher one came up last.
[DANIEL 8:1-3]

Then Belshazzar gave the command, and they clothed Daniel with
purple and put a chain around his neck, and made a proclamation
concerning him that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.

Hello Ray,

Sorry for the delay in my response. You stated:

Quote:

The missing years are actually from the kingdom of the Persians.   WikiPedia has a pretty balanced description of both sides of the debate.  Not all Jewish authorities agree with the Seder Olam Rabbah version of the chronology upon which your post is based.   The following Jewish scholars wrote extensively on the discrepancy.

The following is from wekipedia----
Quote:
R' Azariah dei Rossi, in his magnum opus, Me'or Einayim (circa 1573), was likely the first Jewish authority to claim that the traditional Hebrew dating is not historically precise regarding the years before the Second Temple.

R' Nachman Krochmal in Guide to the perplexed of our times (Hebrew, 1851) points to the Greek name Antigonos mentioned in the beginning of Avot as proof that there must have been a longer period to account for this sign of Hellenic influence. He posits that certain books of the Bible such as Kohelet and Isaiah were written or redacted during this period.

R' David Zvi Hoffman (1843–1921) points out that the Mishna in Avot (1:4) in describing the chain of tradition uses the plural "accepted from them" even though the previous Mishna only mentions one person. He posits that there must have been another Mishna mentioning two sages that was later removed.

Isaac Newton in his Chronology of Ancient Kingdoms Amended ( p.357), states the following concerning the missing years of the Jewish chronology:

"Some of them took Herod for the Messiah, and hence were called Herodians,"  .....They seem to have grounded their opinion on the 70 weeks, which they reckoned from the 1st year of Cyrus (!).  But afterwards, in applying the prophecy to Theudas, and Judas of Galilee. and at length to Bar Cochab, they seem to have shortened the reign of the Kingdom of Persia."

I understand the claims of both sides of this debate.  In my original question to you,  what I am really interested in is what do you believe is the basis for your chronology.  How to you establish a point of synchronization between the Jewish chronology you have posted and our modern calendar?

There are literally hundreds of astronomical records many of which specifically mention the name and years of a king in relation to a specific astronomical event.   In the following posts I will provide several specific records from the original cuneiform texts as found at Babylon and Nineveh.  These quotes come from Richard Stephenson’s book “ Historical Eclipses and Earth’s Rotation.   Also, in the table below is the Babylonian and Persian chronology including the Persian kings left out by the traditional Rabbinic chronology.  As noted by Isaac Newton and others the missing years are a direct result of a misapplication of the 70 weeks vision by early rabbinic chronologists.  They, through successive periods of reinterpretation, “eclipsed” the later part of the kingdom of Persia.

The Behistun Inscription, other historical cylinders, inscriptions and other astronomical records similar to the ones I will be posting all leave little doubt as to the fact there were several Persian kings left out of the Rabbinic chronology.

Warm Regards,
William Struse

Please note in the quotes below that the astronomical records that give “SE” are from the Seleucus era.  They used the calendar as found in the book of Maccabees, Rabbinic writings and Josephus.   The Seleucus ear began in the year 311/312 BC.  I have only included a few of the astronomical records that specifically mention a Seleucus year dating or a specific year of a Babylonian or Persian king.  Please note that these eclipse records can easily be calculated today.   We know precisely when these events took place.
