Full Version: Divorce and Remarriage

Greetings,

I am new on this forum and just wanted to know how a Jewish believer would interpret/understand the passages below. I am curious because I have a feeling I am being taught incorrectly in this. I have been told the following:

1. Marriage is for life and divorce does not dissolve the marital contract
2. Remarriage is "living" in adultery (because you are still married to your first spouse even if you have gotten divorced)
3. Divorce is not allowed under any circumstances, no matter what
4. Those who divorce or who have been divorced are hard-hearted and that is why there is divorce
5. The teaching of Deuteronomy is from Moses but not of God
6. God does not recognize second marriages as anything other than adulterous illicit relationships.
7. Those who stay in their second marriages will be eternally condemned.

My concern is because some are saying if a couple marry, divorce and then marry others, they are to divorce their 2nd spouse and remarry their former spouse. This would be repentance since they are committing adultery through their second marriage.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The scriptural references are:
Deuteronomy 24:1-4
Matthew 5:32
Matthew 19:1-9
Romans 7:2-3
1 Corinthians 7:39
Unfortunatly some are very legalistic in their interpretations on this issue so Ill give you my take on it.
Divorce is a serious issue because marraige was given to man as an expression of the relationship He enters into with His covenant {wife}.
Which is why I am convinced that God will return for the nation of Israel. Currently gentiles are incorporated into the "bride" of Messiah. This is the "one new man" spoken of in Ephesians.

There are certain relationships that are abusive enough to warrant seperation. There are no pat answers that would define as to which relationships are salvagable. Physical, sexual, or mental abuse cannot be placed along side of a ruler. The welfare of children needs to be taken into account as well as the co-dependance that grows between all involved.
Can God bless a divorce? Absolutly! I am a living testimony to that. I am now an elder of our fellowship currently married to a godly woman and blessed with 2 godly children from the union.
After doing some time in prison and detoxing from the drugs, my ex hopfully is doing well. I am sure that I will answer for my sins in the matter but that is something that I have placed behind me while reaching towards the goal of Christ Jesus. God knows the sincerity of our hearts.
Certain scipture in corinthians need to be taken in context but that could get legnthy. "Seek the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding" That might mean going solo for awhile. Hopefully this may even lead to repentance for the covenant offender.

The New Testament says that divorce is okay in adultrey, and that the divorce due to adultrey unbinds the couple, as well as allows remarriage by the cheated former spouse.
