Zion is a Jerusalem stronghold or city, held by Davidic right and Hebraic Judeans (or Jews) by Divine mandate and Divine right.
It is a form of eternal primogeniture (first-born inheritance or succession) and entail (limited to a specific line of inheritors as though a landed estate). This inheritance begins with Isaac, who is identified by G-D Himself as Abraham's "only son" (Genesis 22:12).
The fact is confirmed also by G-D beginning Genesis with the Creation of the Heavens and the Earth, so that the nations might know that He who owns all, may take and give to whom He chooses...and to Israel, Zion (or Salem, in the covenant of Melchizedek) is the eternal covenant place between the inheritors of the estate and Almighty G-D (Genesis 14:18-20).
In Scripture, there is only one "Priest of the Most High G-D" (Melchizedek), and two "Servant(s) of the Most High G-D" (Moses and King David). In effect, all believers in Yeshua share in these three; but only those who demand a full land right of Israel to the 13 tribes of Israel's descendants only, would be termed as true "zionists". No Arab, pseudo-Palestinian, or Gentile of any kind has the right to seize or possess that given to the seeds of Abraham through Isaac and Jacob. He may rent there, but he may not possess.
Zionists are generally those who view Israel under its current borders, plus the southern half of Lebannon, and perhaps as far East as Damascus. (Whatever the general borders between Joshua and David were). Hence, under a Mosaic Covenant with G-D, the existing borders of Israel, and maybe a couple thousand square miles more. Like the size of New Jersey and Delaware combined. At the most extreme, the addition of Maryland as well. Small stuff, small ambitions.
Under the Mosaic Covenant, the Jews sell themselves short by demanding lands as small as the state of Israel now is. By right, they are to own all the lands from the east-most Delta river of Egypt to the Euphrates, all of the Saudi Peninsula, and north to the headwaters of the Euphrates, and most all of Western Turkey south again. This will be the area of their reward in the "Kingdom to Come" under Jesus, as Israel buds and blooms and fills the world with fruit. Where their fruit -- under Jesus' blessings upon them -- of a single head of wheat yields over ten pounds of fine white flour, and a single grape has the same amount of juice as a ritual bath does water for an immersion.

A Zionist is all for Israel gaining the ancient boundaries that Israel had and suppots the U.N. act of 1948.
