Exodus 6:6 Therefore say to the children of Israel: ‘I am the Lord; I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, I will rescue you from their bondage, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments.

How did God redeem them? What did it cost Him? And to whom did He pay it?

I thought these were simple, straightforward questions, but the more I think about them, the more I'm uncertain about the answers I have for them.

What are the correct answers and why?

If you continue reading you will see the great judgements that befell the Egyptians..locust,hail etc. He redeemed them with the blood of the passover lamb which was a forerunner of Jesus as the passover lamb of God redeeming us with his precious blood.

   Act 4:19 But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye
Rev:  The Hebrew word used in the original text is "GA'AL'TEE," speaking of being set free through the act of being legally purchased, redeemed, and lawfully taken out of the devil's power.

We had to be legally purchased for the rescue plan to take affect. Having been born in sin and conceived in unrighteousness, we were all condemned men and women. Since the fall, the devil had a legal right to us all. Gaining authority over the cursed planet through Adam and Eve's failure to abide in God's Word, the prince of this world has legitimate authority over everything that belongs to this world. For the rescue plan to stand, then, we had to be bought with a price and become God's own possession as Israel had to be "redeemed by the blood of a lamb" in order to enter God's domain and be freed from Pharaoh's rule.

That price was paid on the night of Passover as the blood of an innocent lamb provided shelter and passage for God's people. This lamb was a symbol, foreshadowing the reality, and was offered by faith for the redeeming of the people from Egypt's ownership. Nearly 1,500 years later the true Lamb of God was offered in Jerusalem as Jesus the Messiah gave Himself up as the ultimate redeeming sacrifice. With His blood He purchased for God men and women from every tongue and tribe and people and nation under heaven.

The Apostle encouraged the early disciples with this revelation, reminding them that "… you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ." I Peter 1:18-19.

Our salvation, while motivated by the highest form of love, compassion and sacrifice, is in fact a legal transaction whereby we have been purchased with a price and now belong to a new master. As you contemplate this third cup of blessing, the cup of redemption, remember that you are not your own!
I think when we look at Messiah as the "Lamb slain before the foundation of the world" and view the types in that light it helps clear up our need to dispensationalize our thoughts. Excellent thought provoking on this one.
You know something: I must have been having a rough night or something. For some reason I was getting myself confused in types and shadows and the real deal and finding nuances and semi-truths everywhere. And being confused, I started to panic that I was believing something wrong. Part of my job is to read in to things, and I think maybe I was having trouble turning that off and getting back to reality. Or maybe arguing with very intelligent people late at night is mushing my brain. At any rate, I should have held off posting until I could get some decent sleep. It might have saved me embarrassment by asking a stupid question.

Now that I'm rested and seeing clearly again, I realize that I don't need help. I agree with mostly everything Joshua said, except for the dispensational part, and only then I withhold agreement (I am not disagreeing) because I'm not sure what he means by that.

Unless someone else wants to argue the points, I've got my head screwed on again, and I don't need help with this anymore. Sorry to trouble you over nothing, but thank you for your help.
I hear you Rev. Not sure I even like the word "dispensational". Only meant it in a context of Gods total plan. Yes, His revelation to man came in stages but His plan for salvation was ultimately Calvary.
Hey! It was late and I was caught off gaurd with that one myself :}
