Jewish women. Why am I attracted to them, in particular? At first sight it is their beauty. Like one of our sages has said, "Beauty is only skin deep". Yet the attraction should certainly go deeper than that.
I am leafing through a book, Israel Face of a People ISBN 0-89009-226-5 , copywrite 1979. I am amazed at the photogenic quality of the "modern" Israeli woman.
Are they still people of the Book? When the state was first established, Ben-Gurion tried to skip over two- thousand years of Diaspora, of exile and to create a direct link between the first return to Zionism and the second return through the Bible. He himself would talk of King David and His weaknesses or about Joshua the son of Nun as though they were his own contemporaries.
In his home and in the home of the third president of the State, Zalman Shazar, the leading Bible scholars of the country would meet for a weekly study group. The non-religious state schools of the country teach an average of four hrs. of Bible per week as a history subject, International Bible contests for young people are held every year on Independence Day and there is a national Bible meeting annually at Succot, but... it cannot be said that the Bible is really an integral part of the life of the Israeli: it has been superseded by the newspaper.
What is the role of the Israeli woman today in the family? When do Israeli women have time to study the Bible in the midst of their persecution? Where do they fit in the scheme of the Israeli work a day world? Are they allowed to teach their children of Joshua, Y'shua and the return of Christ?
