We were having a discussion in church a couple of weeks ago about being a rabbi in the time of Jesus. How many rabbis were there during the time of Jesus? How did they survive financially or what was their pay? Were they a part of a specific or local synagogue? Any and all information would be appreciated and where you got your facts would also be appreciated!!

the title rabbi wasnt always an office title. jesus was called rabbi, it mean teacher.
the stuff i read said the rabbi paul worked for the sandhedrin. wasnt it gamamiel that dispatched him to syria the day he was blinded in the road? so, logic indicates that sandhedrin paid him.
